What is Sculptra and what does it do?
Sculptra is an advanced injectable treatment that gradually restores facial volume and smooths deep wrinkles by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production. Its active ingredient, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), works beneath the skin to rebuild structure and support, making it ideal for addressing hollow areas and age-related volume loss.
Unlike traditional fillers that provide immediate results, Sculptra offers a gradual, natural-looking rejuvenation over several weeks, with results that can last up to two years or more. It’s a great choice for those seeking subtle, long-lasting improvement without an overfilled appearance.
What to Expect
Before Your Procedure — Pre-Treatment Instructions
To ensure the best possible results and minimize the risk of bruising or swelling, we recommend preparing your skin and body ahead of time. Avoid blood-thinning medications or supplements—like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, or vitamin E—for about 5–7 days prior, unless otherwise directed by your physician. These can increase your chances of bruising at the injection sites.
If you’re prone to cold sores and plan to have Sculptra near the mouth area, speak to your provider in advance. A preventative antiviral medication may be recommended. It’s also a good idea to avoid alcohol, intense exercise, or heavy sun exposure the day before and the day of your treatment.
Come to your appointment with a clean face—free of makeup, lotions, or SPF. Comfortable clothing and a calm mindset will help you feel relaxed throughout the visit.
During Your Procedure
Sculptra is injected into specific areas of the face using a fine needle or cannula. While the procedure is generally well tolerated, we’ll apply a topical numbing cream beforehand to minimize any discomfort.
The treatment usually takes about 30–45 minutes, depending on the number of areas being addressed. You may feel a light pressure or pinch during the injections, and you’ll see some immediate fullness due to the sterile water mixed with the product. This initial volume typically subsides within a few days, and the long-term collagen-stimulating effects begin to develop gradually over the following weeks.
We’ll walk you through everything in real time and make sure you’re comfortable from start to finish.
After Your Procedure: Post-Treatment Instructions
Mild swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection sites is normal and should resolve within a few days. Bruising is possible, especially in more sensitive areas. To support healing, you can apply a cool compress in short intervals during the first 24 hours. Avoid direct ice contact and use clean, gentle pressure only.
For at least 24 hours after treatment, avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and excessive sun or heat exposure (like saunas or hot tubs). Refrain from applying makeup or active skincare products (like retinoids or exfoliants) on the treated areas until any redness or swelling has settled.
Results from Sculptra develop gradually. You may begin to notice visible improvement after 4–6 weeks, with full effects appearing after a few months as your body builds its own collagen. Most patients need a series of 2–3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart to achieve optimal results.
