What is Juvéderm and what does it do?
Juvéderm is a popular collection of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers designed to add volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps maintain hydration and plumpness, making Juvéderm an effective choice for restoring a youthful, refreshed appearance.
Different formulations within the Juvéderm family can be used to soften wrinkles, lift cheeks, plump lips, and define the jawline. Results are immediate, natural-looking, and can last from 6 months up to 2 years, depending on the specific product and treatment area.
What to Expect
Before Your Procedure — Pre-Treatment Instructions
To prepare for Juvéderm, try to avoid blood-thinning medications or supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E for about 5–7 days prior (unless prescribed). These can increase your risk of bruising.
Avoid alcohol, intense exercise, or prolonged sun exposure the day before and day of your appointment. If you’re prone to cold sores and planning lip filler, let your provider know in advance—you may be advised to take an antiviral medication.
Arrive with a clean, makeup-free face. Hydration helps, so drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your treatment.
During Your Procedure
Your provider will begin by cleansing and numbing the treatment area to make the process as comfortable as possible. Juvéderm is injected using a fine needle or cannula to add volume, contour, or smooth lines depending on your goals.
The procedure typically takes 30–45 minutes. You may feel light pressure or pinching, but most patients find the treatment very tolerable.
You’ll see immediate results, although minor swelling may make the final result appear fuller at first.
After Your Procedure: Post-Treatment Instructions
Expect some swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection sites, especially around the lips or under the eyes. Bruising is also common but temporary.
Avoid touching or massaging the area unless directed. Refrain from intense workouts, heat exposure, saunas, and alcohol for 24–48 hours post-treatment.
Do not apply makeup or strong skincare products (retinoids, exfoliants, etc.) to the area for the first day. Stick to gentle cleansing and moisturizing.
Results typically settle within a week and last anywhere from 6–12 months, depending on the area treated and type of filler used.
